Top 10 Tips on How to be a Successful Fashion Designer Without a Degree:
If you want a career as a fashion designer, but can’t afford to go to university, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to do it without a degree. Many of today’s renowned designers have degrees in different areas. A fashion designer with a degree in business might be well-versed in marketing and management while another might be an expert in the technical aspects of fashion such as construction, sewing and fabric selection. You can get the knowledge you need without going to school. It is one of the best. You can find someone who has been where you want to go and then watch and learn as they share their wisdom with you. It is possible to read. If you want to study, read everything you can get your hands on. Magazines, books, newspapers, and trade journals.
Everything. After a while, you will have absorbed so much info you’ll be able to synthesize it all and create your own unique “style” that is all your own. Here are 12 tips on how to become a fashion designer without a degree:
Tip #1:
Learn to Sew Almost every designer starts out by learning to sew. If you don’t know how to sew, you’re basically starting from scratch. Even if you already have a degree in some other field, you should take time to learn the basics of sewing. The ability to construct something with your hands will serve you well throughout your career as a fashion designer.
Tip #2:
Learn to Manage As a fashion designer, you will be managing people and projects. You’ll need to be able to manage others and stay on top of everything going on. You’ll also need to be able to delegate tasks and stay on top of those things yourself. A good way to learn how to do this is to start a business. This will give you the opportunity to test your management skills under pressure.
Tip #3:
Get Involved With Other Artists Get involved with other artists. Go to art openings, concerts, and plays. Attend classes given by other artists. Participate in creative activities. This will help you stay current and aware of what’s going on in the world of art and creativity. It will also help you understand where you can use your creativity to add value.
Tip #4:
Visit Museums and Art Galleries Go to museums and galleries. Pay attention to what’s being exhibited. Note trends. Note unusual combinations or juxtapositions. You never know – something you see today that sparks an idea for a new fashion design tomorrow. Just like the way Picasso was inspired by a simple African sculpture.
Tip #5:
Learn from youtube videos because there are so many free tutorials out there. Just search under “How To Sew” or “How To Manage A Business” or “Fashion Design 101”. There are also a lot of good basic self-paced online courses available. Here are a few: Online Self-Paced Courses
- Fashion Design 101 – This is a great basic course that teaches you the very basics of how to become a fashion designer. It’s all about understanding the fundamentals. What you learn will serve you well throughout your career as a fashion designer. You can find this course on Udemy.com
- The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Starting A Fashion Business – This is a more advanced course. It has more in-depth information than the previous course and gives you more specific action items you can take. You can find it on The Complete Idiot’s Guide website.
- How To Start And Run A Profitable Clothing Business – This is a course developed by a real-world entrepreneur who started out with nothing except the clothes she wore and a dream. She teaches you by showing you actual examples of how to set up a profitable clothing business.
Tip #6:
Watch fashion shows on television you would get lots of ideas and inspiration from. Just make sure you don’t get sucked into the “Fatal Attraction” of watching too many fashion shows. You’ll get caught up in the glamour and be thinking “Someday, I want to look like that.” And then you’ll spend a small fortune on some awful outfit only to have it be trashed when you turn around because everybody else will be staring at your fat bank account and not the outfit itself. Just a friendly warning.
Tip #7:
There are several books you should read if you seriously want to become a fashion designer. Here are my Top Ten Picks:
The Lazy Man’s Way To Riches – This was written in 1933 and is a timeless classic that tells the story of a man who starts out with nothing except the clothes he wears and uses his wits to work his way up to a position of wealth and influence.
How To Think Straight – A classic example of one of those books you should read just for the information alone. Written in 1940, this little gem teaches you the basic tools you need to think creatively.
Tip #8:
Join some online courses because there are lots of good and affordable courses available that can get your creative juices flowing. Some of the best free ones I’ve found are on online learning portals There are also lots of good and expensive courses like these: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Fashion Design – This is one of the very best books I’ve ever read on fashion design. Written by John Schumacher, it was first published in 1995. It’s been updated and re-published several times since then. It contains a lot of great info but what I especially love about this book is it was written by someone who has been practicing what he teaches for more than 20-years. He shows you by example how to solve real-world problems every fashion designer faces.
Tip #9:
Use the yellow pages of your phone book. Almost every town in America has a “fashion designers” section. If your local phone book is organized by phone numbers, look under “dressmakers” or “suit makers.” Call and ask if there’s anyone you can go to for help with fashion design. Most likely, somebody will say “yes,” and then explain they are not a designer themselves but know someone who is. Talk to that person. Ask if you can buy merchandise from them at a discount. (Discounts as high as 80% are not unusual.) If they’re willing to set up a trade with you, great. If not, thank them for their time and move on to the next person. You may come up empty-handed but, at least, you tried.
Tip #10:
Use social media like Instagram, Facebook there are lots of groups available where you can get more ideas and share your thoughts about what you want to create. Try to attend as many of these group discussions as possible. The people in these groups are extremely generous with their ideas and insights. Listen to what they say, try some of their ideas, steal some of their best ones and go off in your own unique direction.
How to Study Fashion Design – 2021 – Masterclass
The first thing you need to do is get an education in fashion design. Sewing! A lot of people think that they don’t have to learn how to sew. This is not the truth. If you want to become a fashion designer, you need to know how to sew. A simple pair of pants can’t be made by most people who claim to be “designers. It’s not that they don’t have the skills, it’s just that they don’t have the desire. It takes a lot of skill to buy something that is ready-made, and a lot of skill to watch a two-year-old learn to tie her own shoes. You need to learn to sew if you want to become a real designer. There are many ways to accomplish this. The most common way to attend a school is segregation.
Conclusion:
Fashion designers don’t have to be designers. They don’t have to be fashion experts. All they need is a good sense of style and the ability to create something that people want to buy. They can hire someone to do the technical work for them. Like a great copywriter, or someone who can create an app for them. Or, they can do it themselves.
We all know fashion designers with advanced degrees in other disciplines have an unfair advantage when it comes to creating a winning fashion collection. But what if you don’t have a degree in fashion? What if you have a different skillset? What if you have an entrepreneurial mindset? What if you are willing to learn on the job? Then you can create your own unique style that is all your own. One that has a massive impact on the world. One that may even lead to a passive income for you.
Anyone can design a great outfit. It takes a real fashion expert to create an outfit that makes people ask for second and third helpings. The same is true for everything in life. If you want to be the best, you must relentlessly focus on the details. What others see as a “no-brainer” will always elude you.
